A Guide to Tree Planting
by Marvin Tang
A Guide to Tree Planting explores archival materials to trace Singapore’s evolving relationship with nature, particularly through the lens of gardens. What began as a simple, beautiful vision in the Tree Planting Campaign of the 1960s grew alongside the nation’s rapid development into one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies. The Garden City narrative is familiar, yet beneath it lies a story intricately woven with policy, planning, and the aspirations of a young nation.
The project was first presented as a book dummy initiated by THE BOOKSHOW in 2016. Nine years later, through an artist residency partnership with Jiazazhi Press, the work has been reimagined with new editing, design, and thinking, culminating in a printed edition aligned with Singapore’s 60th birthday in 2025.
This book is the outcome of an artist-in-residence programme in Ningbo, China, developed in collaboration with Jiazazhi Press, one of China’s most important art book publishers.
